What is a Manual of Style?

As the DragonVale Wiki grows, there are more and more pages being created, and pages do not always follow the same format.

This manual of style has been created to help avoid this, and includes everything which is added to a page, from naming new files, to the order images in a gallery, and how to add notes.

Having the pages as consistent in format as possible will help keep the pages on DragonVale Wiki uniform and appear more professional.

Style and formatting should be consistent within an article. While more than one style is acceptable, editors should not change an article from one style to another without a good reason. Edit wars over differences in styles is unacceptable on this wiki.

Content Control and Article Ownership
Working on an article does not entitle you to "own" the article. Dragonvale Wiki's pages are public property and everyone is allowed to edit it in an attempt to make it better or more accurate.

Always consult with the DragonVale community through Forums before making major edits (i.e. re-formatting page design, inserting templates, etc.) to any of the main DragonVale Wiki pages. This is to ensure that the page's content remains streamlined with the rest of the Wiki's content, and maintains the goal that the wiki remains functional and user-friendly for all DragonVale Wiki users.

To me, style is consistency.

File Naming System

When a new dragon is released, there is a specific way of naming it.

The standard file naming system is:

  1. (Dragon Name)Dragon(Stage).png

There are no spaces, the first letter in the dragon's name is capital, the first letter in the word "dragon" is capital, and the first letter in the stage name is capital.

The "stage" will either be "egg", "baby", "juvenile", or "adult".

For example, let us suppose Backflip Studios releases a "Rock Dragon". The files would be named as follow:

Example
RockDragonAdult.png
RockDragonJuvenile.png
RockDragonBaby.png
RockDragonEgg.png

Update Note: The only permitted file type of the following images is ".png".

Update Note: Please refer the Edit section for more information regarding the file naming system.

Dragonbox

The Dragonbox template uses a complex formula to fill in most of the information for a dragon with the use of a single line of text on each dragon's individual article page. Information such as the dragon's description, the level it is available at, the buying and selling price, the dragon's element, and the dragon's breeding and incubation times are included in the Dragonbox.

The Master Dragon List template acts as a database to store of all the dragons information. All the information can be seen by going to "Edit" and scrolling down the list.

Important Links

Breeding/Obtaining

This section is right underneath the Dragonbox. It gives information about how players can obtain a specific dragon in ways other than purchasing (apart from the primary dragons) the dragon from the market. "Element A" will be the first element listed in the Dragonbox and "Element B" will be the second. "Element A Dragon" would be the basic dragon for "Element A" and "Element B Dragon" would be the basic dragon for "Element B".

For example, the Flower Dragon has its elements listed as Fire and Plant.
Element A = Fire
Element B = Plant
Element A Dragon = Fire Dragon
Element B Dragon = Plant Dragon

Primary Dragons

When (if) a basic dragon is released, the first section under the Dragonbox is titled:

Automated Names

Automated Names are set by habitat. For example, Lapis Dragon would have gemstone names and Moonstruck Dragon would have moon names. Epic dragons that can live in two habitats, such as the Equinox Dragon, will have both epic habitat names. Assignment is a random choosing.

For more information about automated names for each element, please refer the Automated Names page. The names should be listed in alphabetical order and should also include the "General" names.

For any dragon set, just place Automated Names under the Earning Rates chart.

Update Note: The names in the template should be alphabatized.

DON'T FORGET THAT AN TEMPLATE START WITH AND END WITH

Release History

This only applies to limited dragons, except for the Seasonal Dragon which has the 'Appearance Change History' section.

This is a table that states which date a certain dragon is released or re-released into the game. It also states the date that the dragon was removed from the game.

If the dragon has an affiliated decoration, the following code applies. An affiliated decoration is a decoration that either entered the market along with the dragon, left with the dragon, but ultimately, released for the same purpose.

Some limited dragons may not have an affiliated decoration. Thus, the last part in the coding should be removed and the following code would apply.

Some dragons may have additional release history information. The dragon could have expired but can still be bred or/and the dragon could have different affiliated decorations during its availability in two different time. In such cases, an additional table should be added underneath the existing one and thus the following code applies.

Update Note: In some cases Type 2 coding may play a role where the dragon may not have an affiliated decoration.

Notes

Notes provide a way to state interesting things about the dragon. There are many different notes that could be added to different dragons.

  • Include it as a first note if the dragon is limited and was released along side with another dragon or/and decoration in addition to it's affiliated decoration.
    • Format: In addition to its affiliated decoration, the PAGENAME was released along with the ______ Dragon, _______ Dragon, the DECORATION NAME, and the DECORATION NAME.
  • If an affiliated decoration for the limited dragon was released earlier/later, the note should be included.
    • Format: The affiliated decoration, the PAGENAME, was released ______ days earlier/later than the DRAGON's NAME.
  • For dragons that are not limited, a note on the date it was released should be included.
    • Format (if hidden dragon): The PAGENAME was introduced as a hidden dragon, along with the __________ on MONTH DAY, YEAR.
    • Format: The PAGENAME was released on MONTH DAY, YEAR, along with the Building, Other Dragon, and the Decoration. Double bullet point note could be added if the dragon was released on a special occasion related to it.
  • Changes in the description. If so, list the old description.
    • Format One: The {{PAGENAMEs description was changed shortly after release. The previous description was: "__________."
    • Format Two: On MONTH DAY, YEAR, the PAGENAMEs description was changed. The previous description was: "__________."
    • Format Three: On MONTH DAY, YEAR, the PAGENAMEs description was slightly changed. The first/last line of the previous description was: "__________."
  • Any changes such as selling price, experience, breeding and incubation times, dragon's name, egg design, level availability etc.
    • Format (Level Availability): Initially, the PAGENAME was available at level __ but the level availability was changed on MONTH DATE, YEAR, /an unknown date to level __.
  • Breeding rule change.
  • Different breeding and incubation times.
  • Interesting notes that could be noted in the description of the dragon or the dragon itself.
    • Example:
      1) Throughout the Quake Dragon's evolution, the rock on the end of its tail remains the same size.
      2) Although the Flash Dragon moves around its habitat much faster than any other dragon, it moves at the same speed as any other dragon in the Dragon Track.
  • Incorrect breeding time listed in the infobox of the dragon in-game. If the error was corrected on a known date, then add a double bullet point to indicate it with the respective date and if the date is unknown change the sentence from present tense to past tense.
    • Format: The description of the PAGENAME has/had an error in the breeding time when it was first released. The in-game indicator stated that the breeding time was _____, rather than the actual time of _____.
  • Any occurrence that happened with the dragon such as it left during Bring Em' Back etc.
  • Not receiving notifications.
  • Typographical errors/Differences in Notification/Facebook Notification/In-Game Notification/Hatch Menu/In-Game Description (spelling/grammar/plural/non-plural). List the error or differences.
    • Example: The baby Mine Dragon's appearance in the game differs from the one in the sneak peek on DragonVale's Facebook page.
  • Note about able to purchase the dragon at specific level but unable to breed it or vice-versa.
  • Unusual glitch/bug such as no cry sound and receiving orb way above the head. If the glitch/bug is corrected on a known date, include it in a double bullet point and if the date is not known, change the overall sentence to make it past tense.
  • Note of the dragon being portrayed in decorations, buildings, icons etc
  • Note about dragon being on sale for a limited time.
    • Format: The PAGENAME , was listed on sale at a reduced price for a limited period of time.
      • The PAGENAMEs sale ended on MONTH DAY, YEAR, when the price rose from ______ to ______ gems.
  • Note about dragons not being able to breed. Currently, applicable to Gemstone Dragons only.
    • Format: The PAGENAME cannot breed with any other dragon, including breeding with another DRAGON's NAME.
  • Note about the dragon gaining additional ability to do something later on. For example, ability to walk and fly.
  • If a Wiki contributor's art as inspiration is used by Backflip Studios, a note should be included and the username should be linked to his/her Profile.
  • Unusual breeding hint price.

There are many other type of notes that could be added which may or may not be included above. It is advisable to try to compare pages that has a similar existing note to follow the format so that all similar note format are consistent.

Please DO NOT include:

  • Trivial information
  • Physical descriptions
  • Seconds, thirds, fourths etc. ONLY firsts!

Important Important: Please avoid using the word "only" but instead use "first", because what is true now might change in the future and it would be difficult to keep track of this note on all of the pages.

Possible References

Backflip Studios has inserted real life references into DragonVale.

Update Note: This section contains primarily user interpretations of various references found within the game. All these references have not been specifically confirmed by Backflip Studios.

This section should be linked to the DragonVale Real Life References page in the following format:

<span style="color: black; size: 12px;">Possible References</span>
If the description of the possible reference is from the in-game description, then the note should be in the following format;

  • The PAGENAMEs description mentions, "_______". This is likely a reference to ____________________.
  • The PAGENAMEs description states, "_______". This is likely a reference to ____________________.

If the breeding and incubation times is being referenced, then the note should be in the following format;

  • The PAGENAMEs breeding and incubation times of _______, is likely a reference to ____________________.

If the dragon's goal description has a possible real life reference, then the note should be in the following format;

  • The PAGENAMEs goals description mentions/states, "_______". This is likely a reference to ____________________.

External links to Wikipedia could be included with a short description after it. Please see example below. Please avoid pasting direct URL links if possible.

Example, Reindeer Dragon;

<span style="color: black; size: 12px;">Possible References</span>
  • The Reindeer Dragon's description mentions, "Sandakloz". This is likely a reference to Santa Claus.
  • The Reindeer Dragon's description states, "come from the Far North". This is likely a reference to the North Pole, point in the Northern Hemisphere where the Earth's axis of rotation meets its surface.
  • The Reindeer Dragon's description states, "magical toys in boxes bearing the old mage's signature.". This is likely a reference to Santa Claus bringing presents to everyone on Christmas.
