Game Description
The Dragonarium is the center of study and records for all known dragons. This Dragonarium is based on the first Dragonarium built by Carolynn Aristelle on the isles below Mount Oly in ancient days as a place to study dragons. Sadly, in those days they still used paper and parchment to record their knowledge, despite the fact that they were stored near fire-breathing dragons. You know what they say about begin book smart instead of wise: sometimes things catch on fire (or something like that).

Introduction

Update 2.3.0 started with a tutorial introducing all new feature of the game, the Dragonarium.

An image of this tutorial can be viewed in the gallery to the right.

The tutorial took a few seconds to complete, but when players came out of the Help Menu, they received five gems as a goal completion reward after completing the tutorial.

The Dragonarium has multiple features to aid players in collecting the dragons in DragonVale.

Some of the features include identifying a dragon's rarity, identifying a dragon's availability, finding a dragon, sorting dragons by category and sub-category, and seeing how many of a specific dragon the player has in their park.

When new dragons appear in the park or something is unlocked then a red exclamation icon will appear. The icon can be seen in the sub-categories the new dragon or dragons are sorted in.

When a player has at least one of every dragon the final upgrade will show an animation of sparkles and the adult Fire Dragon statue will begin to breathe its breath.

The Dragonarium was originally located on its own private silver colored island between the first, third, fourth, and fifth islands.

The Dragonarium is currently located to the left of the first island and next to the Epic Breeding Island/Epic Breeding Sanctuary and the Cooperative Breeding Cave.

Navigation

There are many features in the Dragonarium which require navigation.

Sub-categories can be sorted by "Name", "Level", "Rarity", and "Availability" by tapping on the button in the bottom right corner of a sub-category.

Players can view the different stages of a dragon by selecting a dragon and tapping on the "Age" button. The first tap will turn the baby stage into the juvenile stage, a second tap will turn the juvenile stage into the adult stage, and a third tap turns the adult stage back into the baby stage.

While looking at an individual dragon the player can also view animations of the specific dragon, have an option to buy an available dragon, or find a dragon in their park.

A small triangle with number at the top right of the dragons card in the Dragonarium allows players to see how many of that specific dragon a player has in his/her park. Upon clicking on the triangle, a message card pops up with the dragon's name and the number of that specific dragon a player has.

Player also have access to the Dragonarium Help Menu from any part of the Dragonarium sections by clicking on the "Help" button in the bottom left corner of the screen.

The gray triangle button in the top left corner of the screen will bring the player to the previous screen.

The red-X button in the top right corner of the screen will exit and close the Dragonarium menu.

Stars

The Dragonarium uses "Star System" to help keep track of collected dragons and completed sub-categories. The number of stars a player has and the number of stars a player needs for the next upgrade can be viewed in the infobox of the Dragonarium.

When a sub-category is completed by obtaining at least one of each dragon in that sub-category, the specific sub-category button will turn from gray to gold.

Each category and sub-category have a different amount of stars, but stars can range from two to six stars depending on the sub-category.

Depending on how many stars the player has, the appearance of the Dragonarium will change and when the Dragonarium is upgraded, it would receive an animation effect temporarily. The player's screen would automatically be directed to where the Dragonarium is located after receiving the last star for the upgrade.

Update Note: When a new dragon is released, the animation of the Dragonarium will cease. This is true whether or not acquiring the new dragon will result in an additional star being rewarded. Acquiring the new dragon will, of course, enable the animation again.

Identifying Rarity

Different dragons in DragonVale have different rarities:

  • Primary dragons contain only one element and can be purchased in the market with DragonCash. The only exception is the Dargon Dragon, which is a Rare dragon despite having only the fire element.
  • Hybrid dragons are permanent dragons which have a higher breed rate than Rare Dragons and can be purchased in the Market with gems.
  • Rare dragons are dragons that consist of Golden Hybrid, Rift Exclusive Dragons (except for Chromacorn, Corrupticorn, Spectrapod, and Pearlescent, which are Epic), and some limited dragons. They are usually harder to breed than Hybrid dragons, though the breed rate of Rare dragons can be significantly increased by using dragons of a high level.
  • Epic Dragons are any limited or permanent dragons which contain an Epic element. Though they have a much lower base breeding rate than Hybrid or Rare dragon-usually less than 5%-most Epic dragons make more DragonCash per minute than other rarities.
  • Gemstone Dragons are limited dragons which make gems as income rather than DragonCash. They have a very specific breeding combo required in order to be bred, as well as extremely low breeding rates. Gemstone dragons are also unable to breed themselves, except for during Shimmering Solstice mini-events, to prevent their exploitation.
  • Galaxy Dragons are permanent dragons in which can only be bred via the Co-operative Breeding Cave (except for the Lunis, Solis, and Rigel dragons). They have a low breeding rate, similar to that of Epic Dragons, though the player is guaranteed to occasionly obtain them as a login reward.
  • Legendary Dragons are powerful dragons which can only be obtained by completing artifacts related to them. As a result of the way they are obtained, legendary dragons cannot be bred, nor can they have a twin variation. Once summoned, each legendary dragon has a unique ability which proves very useful at times, though can only be used once per four days (Ts'aishen, however, requires 750 abundant essence rather than a cooldown).
  • Mythic Dragons are powerful dragons which can attempt to level up your primary/hybrid/rare dragons once per day. Similarly to Legendary Dragons, they are summoned by completing artifacts related to them, are unable to breed, and are unable to have a twin variation.

Identifying the rarity of a dragon is simplified by checking the banner color below and surrounding the dragon's icon in the Dragonarium:

  • Primary Dragons have a white banner color, and no color surrounding their icon.
  • Hybrid Dragons have a green banner color, and no color surrounding their icon.
  • Rare Dragons have a blue color.
  • Epic Dragons have a purple color.
  • Gemstone Dragons have an orange color.
  • Galaxy Dragons have a cyan color.
  • Legendary Dragons have a red color.
  • Mythic Dragons have a pink color.

Identifying Availability

One of the features the Dragonarium offers is the option to identify availability and whether a dragon is limited or not.

Limited Dragons have an hourglass symbol on their icon, as well as on their profile page.

If a sub-category has limited dragons in it, an hourglass is located in the top-left corner of sub-category's button in the Dragonarium. If there is at least one dragon available in a sub-category which is available, the hourglass will be shaded in the color green instead of the color gray.

If the dragon is currently available, the hourglass will be green. Otherwise, the icon is grayed out.

If the player has yet to obtain a dragon which is not available, the dragon's icon will contain a greyed-out hourglass with the words 'not available' instead of having the dragon's image. If this is clicked, a popup will appear which says "We're Sorry! This item is not available at this time."

Finding A Dragon

One of the features the Dragonarium offers is the ability to find and locate a specific dragon anywhere in the park. This includes dragons located in both habitats and the Hibernation Cave.

To use this feature follow these steps:

  • Open the Dragonarium.
  • Select a category the dragon being searched for is in.
  • Select the sub-category the dragon being searched for is in.
  • Select the target dragon.
  • Tap on the "Find" button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Select the dragon which appears on the list. If there's more than one, select the one you wish to go to.
  • Tap on the "Find" button.

An example of tutorial to find the Sakura Dragon can be viewed in the gallery to the right.

Categories

With the introduction of the Dragonarium, dragons were assigned specific categories and sub-categories.

The Dragonarium has four main categories, and thirty-three sub-categories. There is also a main category for egg pedestals and decorations.

  • The "All" category contains every sub-category.
  • The "Elemental" category contains permanent dragons in the ten primary elements. The only epic dragon in this category is the Nightbloom Dragon.
  • The "Epic" category contains dragons of Epic, gemstone, Galaxy, Legendary or Mythic rarity.
  • The "Special" category contains sub-categories related to limited dragons, and Rift-element dragons.

If a player has fewer than ten Stars then only the first two main categories will appear in the Dragonarium.

Notes

  • The Dragonarium was added to DragonVale on May 13, 2014 along with the Orchid Dragon, Nectar Dragon, Wisp Dragon, Sulfur Dragon, and Arctic Dragon.
  • The Dragonarium has its own soundtrack which is different from the rest of the DragonVale soundtrack.
  • A player can access the Dragonarium of his/her friend. Besides that, the "Find" tool can also be used in a player's friend park.
  • On September 23, 2014, the Dragonarium's location moved from next to the Starting Island and the Third Island, to near the Epic Breeding Island
  • On December 17, 2014, the Dragonarium received a Pedestal Category.
    • Having all the Egg Pedestals is not required for the Dragonarium to become animated.
  • The Kite Dragon and Gourd Dragon are only listed in the "All" category and not in any sub-category.
  • On June 8, 2015, the Dragonarium slightly changed in appearance.
  • On May 18, 2017, the Dragonarium received a Decorations Category.
  • On February 13, 2019, sorting in the Dragonarium had a new criteria of "Amount Owned".
  • Based on 2019 data from those who achieved Blue/Purple Fire status:
    • Red Fire: Own at least one of every dragon
    • Blue Fire: Own at least one twin of every dragon (Twins excludes Legendary, Mythic, Rift Only Dragons, and (according to Discord), Ghostly Dragons.)
    • Purple Fire: 1) Blue Fire Requirements and 2) unlock every rift trait of each dragon that can acquire a rift trait. (Excludes Legendary, Mythic, Rift Only Dragons and Ghostly Dragons)
    • N. B. If Purple Fire requirement #2 is met, but not #1 (IOW not one of every twin), then the Dragonarium may not show any fire (according to Reddit).
