Gemstone Dragons are a rare, special type of dragon characterized by their ability to earn Gems rather than DragonCash. Each gemstone dragon has a specific breeding combo, meaning that only one combination has the possibility of breeding a gemstone dragon. Unless the Shimmering Solsticemini-event is active, gemstone dragons are unable to breed with other dragons.
Like crystalline dragons, Gemstone Dragons have a very low chance of appearing when the required parents are bred. Although there are always two gemstone dragons available to breed at any time, each one can only be bred during certain times of the year. The chance for a gemstone dragon to result from breeding can be increased by using the Epic Breeding Island/Epic Breeding Sanctuary, and by leveling up the parent dragons.
There are two classes of Gemstone Dragons: Birthstone dragons, which are available during their respective month, and quarterly dragons, which are available for three months. The Ovalith Dragon, however, is an exception and can only be bred during certain events.
The February gemstone, Amethyst Dragon, was initially released with an error, in that the game description indicated the breeding and incubation times as 28 hours but the code required 30 hours. This was corrected shortly after release.
The breeding and incubation times of quarterly gemstone dragons is calculated: There are 365.25 days in a year, for an average of 30.4375 days each month. 30.4375 hours, is equivalent to 30 hours, 26 minutes and 15 seconds.
A few of the twelve birthstone dragons share physical traits with their zodiac counterpart. For example, the Garnet Dragon has goat horns and a tail fin incorporated into its design, which are characteristics of Capricorn.
